Before we can understand why the Word is alive, we have to understand what was dead. Or rather — what was hidden. In 1947, a young Bedouin shepherd named Muhammad edh-Dhib was searching for a lost goat in the cliffs above the Dead Sea. He threw a stone into a cave to startle the animal. Instead of a goat, he heard something shatter. He climbed inside and found clay jars — ancient, sealed, forgotten. Inside them were scrolls wrapped in linen. Scrolls that had been hidden in those caves for nearly two thousand years. The world stopped. What he had stumbled upon were the Dead Sea Scrolls — the oldest known manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible, along with dozens of texts that had never made it into the official canon. Hidden by a Jewish community called the Essenes before the Romans destroyed the Temple in 70 CE, these scrolls were their library. Their most sacred writings. Their memory of a world that was passing away. They were buried so that the words would survive. And they did. Over 900 manuscripts were eventually recovered from eleven caves near Qumran — including multiple copies of Isaiah, the Psalms, and Genesis. But also the Book of Enoch. The Book of Jubilees. The War Scroll. The Temple Scroll. Texts that the church had set aside, but that the ancient world had treasured. The Dead Sea Scrolls did not contradict the Bible. They expanded it. They showed us that the ancient world was far richer, far stranger, and far more layered than the version most of us were handed in Sunday school. The lamp is still burning.
