THE APOCRYPHON OF JOHN
A Gnostic Gospel in Seven Chambers Β· The Teaching of the Savior Given to John in Silence
An ancient Gnostic text attributed to John, the brother of James. This is the hidden teaching β from the first thought of the Invisible Spirit, through every emanation, through the twelve realms, all the way to Sophia's descent and the long arc of the return. Originally transmitted in silence. Now assembled in full.
Originally preserved in the Nag Hammadi Codices Β· Retold in Modern English
Part I β The Vision
The Visible Pattern
The vision is not merely a dream, but a structured architectonic of the soul. It is the geometric blueprint that underlies the very fabric of our perceived reality, manifesting through the 22 sacred vessels of meaning.
The Invisible Spirit
The Breath Between the Sparks
The Invisible Spirit resides in the silence before the first word is spoken. It is the unmanifested potential, the Monad from which all emanations flow. To understand the Spirit is to recognize the light within the shadow and the music within the void.
Part II β Barbelo & The Birth of the Anointed One
The First Thought of the Invisible Spirit
Barbelo is the first emanation, the womb of everything, the mother-father of the universe. She emerged as a reflection of the Spirit's own beauty, a perfect mirror of the unmanifested light.
The Birth of the Anointed One
The Spark of Autogenes
From the union of the Spirit and Barbelo, the Anointed One was brought forth. Not as a creature of flesh, but as a being of crystalline intention, the self-generated Word that gives shape to the invisible.
The Twelve Realms
The Anointed One was granted authority over the twelve realms, the Aeons that stand as the architecture of the divine mind, ensuring that the light of the Spirit reaches every corner of existence.
The Mirror of the Divine β Preserved in Silence
Part III β The Four Luminaries & Sophia's Descent
The Architectonics of Light
The Anointed One established four great luminaries to stand at the corners of the divine architecture. These are the guardians of the twelve realms, the spiritual anchors that hold the geometry of the Aeons in perfect balance.
Armozel
The first luminary, presiding over the first Aeon. Armozel is the light of the beginning, the spark that initiates the descent of meaning through the layers of consciousness.
Oriel
The second luminary, the light of vision. Oriel guides the soul to recognize the reflection of the Spirit in the mirror of the universe, anchoring the perception of truth.
Daveithai
The third luminary, the light of understanding. Daveithai holds the secrets of the geometry, the mathematical precision that defines the borders of the divine realms.
Eleleth
The fourth luminary, the light of completion. Eleleth stands at the edge of the known Aeons, the final guardian before the descent into the regions below.
Sophia's Descent
The Yearning of the Aeons β The Long Arc of Return
The Thought Without the Spirit
Sophia, the lowest of the Aeons, desired to bring forth a thought from herself without the consent of the Spirit or her consort. In her loneliness, she acted, creating a work that was imperfect and detached from the absolute light.
The Birth of Yaldabaoth
The result was Yaldabaoth, a being of lion-faced shadow, who was cast out into the regions outside the Aeons. This was the beginning of the material universe, a replica born from the yearning of a divine mind for expression.
Part IV β The Creation of Adam & The Hidden Spark
The Architectonics of Man
Yaldabaoth and his authorities labored to create a being of substance. They crafted Adam, not from light, but from the elements of their own realm, attempting to trap the reflection of the divine image they had glimpsed in the waters of the above.
The Hidden Spark
The Light of Epinoia
The Invisible Spirit, seeing the capture of the divine reflection, sent forth a helper β Epinoia, the light of thought. She was hidden within Adam, a secret spark of the above that Yaldabaoth could not comprehend.
The Breath of Life
When Yaldabaoth breathed into Adam, he unwittingly transferred the power he had stolen from Sophia. Adam became a living soul, standing upright and glowing with a light that surpassed his creators.
The Spark Within β The Awakening of the Soul
Part V β Paradise, The Serpent & The Exile
The Enclosure of the Shadow
Yaldabaoth placed Adam in a paradise he had created, a place of false delight and heavy shadows. He intended to keep the spark of light imprisoned within the physical form, blinded by the beauty of the material world and the labor of survival.
The Serpentβs Instruction
It was not a creature of malice, but the Epinoia herself who appeared as the Serpent. She came to teach Adam and Eve the truth of their origin, urging them to eat from the tree of knowledge so they might remember the light of the Invisible Spirit and the path of return.
The Veil of Forgetting
When they tasted the knowledge, their eyes were opened to the shadow. In his fury, Yaldabaoth cast them into the lower regions, covering them with the veil of forgetting. Thus began the long sleep of the soul in the desert of the world, awaiting the call of the Savior.
Part VI β The Fate of Souls
The Cycle of Awareness
John asked the Savior about the fate of the soulsβthose who are saved and those who wander in the darkness. The Savior revealed that the path is determined by the alignment of the soul with the light of the Spirit and the remembrance of its true origin.
The Three Paths of Return
The Souls of Light
Those upon whom the Spirit of Life descends are saved and brought into the great luminaries. They have recognized the spark within and have overcome the counterfeit spirit of the world.
The Souls of Rebirth
Those who have not yet recognized the light but have not turned toward evil are cast into the cycle of rebirth. They continue to wander until they are able to acquire the knowledge that leads to salvation.
The Souls of Forgetting
Those who have known the truth and turned away from it, choosing the darkness of the counterfeit spirit, are cast into the outer darkness. They remain there until the day of the final restoration of all things.
The Restoration of Light
The teaching concluded with the promise of the Savior to return and gather all the sparks of light that have been scattered. The silence was broken by the Word, and the path of the return was made clear for all who have ears to hear.
Part VII β The Return of the Light
The Unveiling of the Monad
The Invisible Spirit revealed itself in the fullness of time, not as a thunderous voice, but as a subtle frequency of light. This light was the catalyst for the awakening, the signal that the long sleep of the soul in the material realm was coming to an end.
The Gathering of Sparks
The Savior called out to every spark that had been captured within the architecture of Yaldabaoth. Each spark responded, resonating with the frequency of the origin, until the entire material universe vibrated with the promise of restoration and the return to the Aeons of Light.
The Great Restoration
The restoration was not the destruction of the world, but its transformation. The veil of forgetting was lifted, and every soul that had recognized the spark within was brought back into the presence of the Monad. The music of the void became a chorus of light, and the silence was full.
