The 22 Major Arcana are not characters or archetypes. They are the 22 paths of the Tree of Life — the corridors of force that connect the 10 Sephiroth. When a Major card appears, it is showing you which corridor you are in.

The lightning bolt of divine force descends through the Tree of Life in a specific sequence — striking each Sephirah in order from 1 to 10. The 22 paths are the corridors through which that force travels. Reading the Major Arcana in order is reading the map of that descent.

HOW TO READ A MAJOR ARCANA CARD
What It Means When a Major Appears · The Corridor, Not the Character
When a Major Arcana card appears in a reading, it is not describing a person or a personality type. It is identifying the corridor you are currently moving through — the path between two Sephiroth that is currently active in your life.
IDENTIFY THE CORRIDOR
Which two Sephiroth does this path connect? That tells you which two states of being are in tension. The card is the force moving between them.
IDENTIFY THE DIRECTION
Are you ascending (moving toward Kether) or descending (moving toward Malkuth)? Ascending means integration. Descending means manifestation. The same path feels different depending on direction.
IDENTIFY THE DEMAND
Every Major Arcana card carries a core demand — what the path requires of you in order to traverse it. The Fool demands the leap. Justice demands the weighing. The Tower demands surrender. What is this path asking?
A Major card paired with a Minor card gives you the full address: the corridor (Major) + the room (Minor Sephirah) + the world (suit). Together they tell you exactly where you are on the Tree.

THE FOOL'S JOURNEY — A Narrative Map of the 22 Paths

The Fool does not travel through the cards in order. The Fool is the force of pure potential — Aleph, the breath — that enters the Tree at the top and descends through every corridor until it reaches embodiment in Malkuth. The 22 cards are not a linear story. They are the 22 pressures the soul encounters as it moves between states of being.
THE SUPERNAL TRIANGLE

THE ABYSS — The Great Divide

The Tree of Life is divided by an invisible threshold called the Abyss — the gulf between the Supernal Triangle (Kether, Chokmah, Binah) and the seven lower Sephiroth. The Abyss is not a path; it is the space where Daath — the hidden Sephirah of Knowledge — sits as a gate. Paths 11, 12, 13, and 14 all operate within or above the Abyss, representing forces beyond conventional human experience. Every other path operates below it, within the realm of manifestation and action.

These paths carry forces that are pre-formal — before the world of creation has taken shape. They are not experiences you can plan for or intellectualize. They simply arrive, demanding surrender and acceptance. The Fool leaps before the world exists. The Magician directs before there is anything tangible to direct. The High Priestess holds silence before there is anything to say. The Empress generates before there is anything to receive.
These are not lessons. They are initiations.

These paths carry forces that are experiential — they can be walked, worked, and integrated into one's life. They are the tangible corridors of the human journey: love, power, sacrifice, death, illumination, and completion. These are the paths most people encounter in Tarot readings and in daily life, guiding through the challenges and triumphs of existence.
These are the corridors of the work.
Crossing the Abyss — moving from the lower tree into the Supernal Triangle — is the great initiatory threshold of the Kabbalistic path. In a reading, a Supernal path card (The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress) signals that something is happening at the level of pure divine force — not a lesson to be learned through conscious effort, but a profound pressure to be received and integrated into one's being.

THE THREE PILLARS — The Geometry of the 22 Paths

The Tree of Life is organized around three vertical pillars. Every path crosses one of these pillars — or runs along the Middle Pillar itself. The pillar a path crosses tells you the quality of force it carries: expansive and merciful, contracting and severe, or balanced and integrating.

The paths that cross the Pillar of Mercy carry expansive, generative, outpouring force. They are the paths of abundance, vision, and creative overflow.

REVERSED CARDS — The Descending Face of the Path
Not Opposite · Not Blocked · The Same Corridor, Moving Downward

In most Tarot traditions, a reversed card means the opposite of its upright meaning, or a blocked version of its energy. In the Kabbalistic system, reversal means something more precise: the same path, moving in the descending direction — from a higher Sephirah toward a lower one. The force is identical. The direction is inverted.

THE ASCENDING FACE (Upright)
Moving toward Kether · Integration · Initiation · The force rising through the corridor

When a card appears upright, the path is active in its ascending direction — the soul is being drawn upward through this corridor. The demand of the path is being made. The pressure is toward integration, toward the higher Sephirah. This signifies a readiness to receive and assimilate higher spiritual energies.

Examples:
The Fool upright: The leap is being demanded. Pure potential is pressing toward Chokmah, ready for divine inspiration.
The Tower upright: The false structure is being struck. The lightning is descending to clear the path, forcing necessary liberation.
Death upright: Release is being demanded. Tiphareth is calling Netzach to let go, moving toward profound transformation and rebirth.

THE DESCENDING FACE (Reversed)
Moving toward Malkuth · Manifestation · Resistance · The force descending through the corridor

When a card appears reversed, the path is active in its descending direction — the force is moving downward, toward manifestation or toward resistance. The demand of the path is being avoided, delayed, or expressed in its shadow form. It often indicates a struggle to integrate or manifest these energies in the material world.

Examples:
The Fool reversed: The leap is being refused. The potential is stuck at the edge of the cliff, unable or unwilling to embrace the unknown.
The Tower reversed: The false structure is resisting the lightning. The collapse is being delayed — and will be more severe when it inevitably comes.
Death reversed: The release is being refused. The old form is clinging. Netzach is holding what Tiphareth has already released, leading to stagnation and prolonged suffering.

The key question with any reversed Major card is not "is this bad?" — it is "which direction is the force moving, and am I moving with it or against it?" The path does not change. The demand does not change. Only the direction of your relationship to it changes; it's about how you are interacting with the universal energies flowing through that specific corridor.

MAJOR + MINOR PAIRINGS — Reading the Full Address
The Corridor + The Room + The World · How to Read Both Cards Together
A Major Arcana card tells you which corridor you are in. A Minor Arcana card tells you which room — and in which world that room is currently active. Together they give you the full address on the Tree of Life: the path (Major), the Sephirah (Minor number), and the world (Minor suit). This is the most precise reading the Tarot can give.

THE TOWER + FIVE OF CUPS
The Tower (Path 27 · Peh · Mars · Hod to Netzach) + Five of Cups (Geburah in Briah · the world of soul)
Full address: You are in the corridor of necessary destruction (The Tower), and the room being destroyed is Geburah in the world of soul — your emotional relationship to power, discipline, and severity. Something in your emotional life that has been too rigid is being struck by lightning. The grief (Five of Cups) is real. The structure deserved to fall.

THE HIGH PRIESTESS + TWO OF SWORDS
The High Priestess (Path 13 · Gimel · Moon · Kether to Tiphareth) + Two of Swords (Chokmah in Yetzirah · the world of mind)
Full address: You are in the corridor of held silence (The High Priestess), and the room is Chokmah in the world of mind — the place where pure wisdom meets the mental plane. The blindfold and crossed swords (Two of Swords) are not confusion. They are the deliberate holding of two truths simultaneously. The High Priestess is teaching you to sit with what you cannot yet resolve.

DEATH + TEN OF PENTACLES
Death (Path 24 · Nun · Scorpio · Tiphareth to Netzach) + Ten of Pentacles (Malkuth in Assiah · the world of matter)
Full address: You are in the corridor of release (Death), and the room is Malkuth in the world of matter — the most physical, most embodied expression of completion. Something in your material world — a home, a lineage, a financial structure — has reached its completion and must be released. The Ten of Pentacles is not a loss. It is a harvest that has been fully gathered. Now the field must be cleared.

TEMPERANCE + ACE OF WANDS
Temperance (Path 25 · Samekh · Sagittarius · Yesod to Tiphareth) + Ace of Wands (Kether in Atziluth · the world of fire/will)
Full address: You are in the corridor of the aimed arrow (Temperance), and the room is Kether in the world of fire — the purest possible expression of divine will. The Ace of Wands is the first flash of the lightning bolt. Temperance is the arrow aimed straight up the Middle Pillar. Together: the will is pure, the aim is true, and the path is the Middle Pillar itself. This is a moment of direct vertical transmission. Do not deflect it.
Every reading is a set of addresses. The Major cards give you the corridors. The Minor cards give you the rooms. The suits give you the worlds. When you can read all three simultaneously, you are reading the Tree — not the cards.
